Duplicating Sets”

This is a fairly simple activity. It involves visual discrimination, matching, and one-to-one correspondence.

1.     Gather a collection of miscellaneous objects in a box or basket. Make sure that you have two of each item. Some easy-to-find items include:

crayons childrens scissors erasers toy animals artificial flowers blocks rocks shells

2.     Place several of the items in a row in the center of the circle. Ask a child to come up and create a matching row.

3.     To increase the difficulty, add more items to your row. If it is appropriate for your age group, count the items in each row.

4.     If you use items that are related to each other, you can extend the activity by asking children to determine how all of the objects are alike.

Examples:

  • Things you use at mealtime:
  • cup, spoon, fork, napkin
  • Things that are used as fasteners:
  • tape, paper clip, clothespin, stapler
